Mark Flekken blames Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal, among others, for the goalkeeper playing at SC Freiburg again next season. Among other things, an English club had asked the 29-year-old.
Van Gaal takes care of Flekken in Freiburg: Mark Flekken bases his stay at SC Freiburg on entering the Europa League, but also on words from Louis van Gaal, as “Bild” reports. According to Flekken, the Dutch national coach finds it “extremely important that you play your games regularly. If I perform well here and don’t sit in a deck chair next to the post, that’s the case in Freiburg.” Flekken has his sights set on a place in the World Cup squad after making his Oranje debut in February 2022.
Short, compact, clear
Honest words from Flekken: Most recently, Brentford FC had toyed with signing the 29-year-old. Flekken admits that he did look around at other clubs. After all, he had “not yet reached the end of my career”. However, there was always a lot to be said for Freiburg: “I didn’t want to take any risks.”
Number one for the first time: Flekken was number one in the Freiburg goal for the first time last season. Since then he has set the tone in the battle for the goalkeeper position with Benjamin Uphoff and will even be the team’s vice-captain next season.
