Winter Weather Outlook for Central Texas: Updates and Predictions for La Niña’s Return
AUSTIN, TX – As the winter season approaches, Central Texas residents brace themselves for the potential challenges that lie ahead. With a combination of a warming climate, the return of La Niña, and a worsening drought, this winter could bring about a variety of weather conditions that will impact the region.
New Winter Weather Alerts
This winter, the National Weather Service is implementing changes to its alert system to provide more straightforward and effective messaging. Freeze Watches and Freeze Warnings will be issued ahead of the first expected freeze of the season, replacing the previous system of multiple alerts throughout the winter. In addition, Wind Chill Alerts will be replaced by Cold Weather Advisories, Extreme Cold Watches, and Warnings to better convey the impending cold temperatures.
La Niña Returns
La Niña, a weather pattern characterized by cooler-than-normal waters in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, is making a comeback for the fourth time in the last five winters. This pattern typically results in warmer and drier conditions for Central Texas due to changes in the jet stream.
Recent La Niña Winters
Despite the overall trend towards warmer and drier conditions during La Niña winters, Central Texas has experienced severe winter weather outbreaks in recent years. From the historic snowfall and freezing temperatures in mid-February 2021 to the devastating ice storm of early February 2023, these events serve as a reminder to always be prepared for unpredictable weather.
Challenges Ahead
This winter, experts are predicting a weaker and shorter duration La Niña pattern, which presents unique challenges in forecasting due to climate change. The strength of La Niña is influenced by the temperature of the eastern Pacific Ocean, but as global warming continues, it becomes harder for waters to cool to the levels required for a strong La Niña.
