After the DFB Cup game against Mainz 05, Julian Nagelsmann caused confusion with statements about a team meeting because of the result crisis. Now it is known how the session actually went. The Bayern coach approached each player individually.
Three times 1:1, only one point ahead of the lurking competition – in the Bundesliga the tree is burning at Bayern. For this reason, coach Julian Nagelsmann took a special measure. He canceled the training-free Monday and instead scheduled a unit followed by a team meeting, a crisis meeting.
After the successful DFB Cup game against Mainz 05 (4-0) on Wednesday, he irritated with a statement that the team would have met without him, but it has now become known how the meeting actually went.
After the penalty practice, Nagelsmann invited his team to the auditorium on Säbener Straße. This is the team boardroom on the top floor of the players’ wing. But instead of using the screen to analyze the past games, the coach tackled his pros individually. This is reported by “Image”.
The young coach asked each player three questions. “Where are we?”, “Where do we actually want to go?” and “What do we have to do to get there?”. One professional after the other, Nagelsmann had to answer these questions and also assess how he assesses his own performance. The players then received feedback from the coach on his view of their level of performance.
The fans got to see one thing from the session on Wednesday: Müller and Musiala in the starting XI and in the middle. The team was mostly in favor of putting the veteran alongside the youngster. Musiala himself is said to have advocated that Müller act alongside him.
Nagelsmann brought both players into the center against Mainz and even did without a defender. With a back three, Müller and Musiala and also with newcomer Joao Cancelo, Bayern celebrated their first competitive win in 2023 and threw Mainz out of the cup. Müller acted primarily as an initiator and prepared a goal, while Musiala brilliantly converted Müller’s template.
In any case, Müller and Musiala together are a model for the future, whether with or without a back three. And who knows: maybe the crisis meeting brought other insights that give Bayern a boost. The game against Mainz was just the beginning at best.
