MOSCOW, April 21/ Radio Sputnik. Scientific Director of the hydrometeorological center of Russia Roman Vilfand said the reason for high fire danger in the area of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, RIA Novosti reported.
According to him, the fire was provoked by the fact that the earth does not freeze in winter. In addition, the situation was affected by the lack of snow. He added that such conditions were characteristic of most forests in Eastern Europe.
Vilfand noted that the natural fire danger existed, however, the main role played by the human factor, which caused the fire.
“the First snow this winter, can not say that did not exist. The second ground does not freeze. Typically, the depth of soil freezing near Moscow – in the region of 50-60 cm, in the center of Kiev less, but this is not so important. When the earth was frozen, it retains moisture that has accumulated in the fall. If the ground does not freeze and there is no snow, when anticyclonic weather even in March, when there is no precipitation, the wind is, there is dehydration of the upper layers of the soil and the drying out of the upper 20-30 cm of soil layer. In this connection it is projected early natural fire danger,” – said the forecaster.
the fire on the territory of the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl NPP occurred on April 4, rescuers about 10 days not able to extinguish the fire. The fire was liquidated on April 14. It was noted that the excess of radiation levels near Chernobyl isn’t fixed. Ukrainian law enforcers have identified the man, who is suspected of involvement in the fire on the territory of Kotovsk forest, located on the territory of the exclusion zone.
According to Vilfand, rain in the Chernobyl zone the rest of the week is not expected.
Earlier radio Sputnik reported that the mayor of Kiev told about the radiation level in the city in connection with the fire at Chernobyl.
