From July 6, 2022, two new assistance systems will be mandatory for new vehicles. These should ensure more safety on the road. It’s about microsleep and drunk driving.

In a few days, a new regulation for motor vehicles will come into force in Germany. From July 6, 2022, two warning systems must be installed in all new vehicle types. From July 7, 2024, the regulation will apply to all new vehicles. The first system is intended to warn drivers if they do a microsleep.

In a 2016 survey, 26 percent of respondents said they had fallen asleep while driving. Because of this, serious accidents happen again and again. The new system must be included in the standard version of the vehicles and must not incur any extra costs.

The second new system concerns drinking and driving. An interface for alcohol-sensitive immobilizers must be integrated here in the future. The driver’s breath alcohol level is determined using a corresponding device. If this is too high, the vehicle’s ignition is blocked.

Here, however, it must be noted that only the interface is mandatory, but not the measuring device. This regulation should therefore not change much. Such devices are very expensive and have to be calibrated regularly, which causes follow-up costs. Most drivers will therefore probably refrain from purchasing and using one.
