The Omicron variant BA.5 is becoming more and more widespread. It is now dominant not only in Germany, but also in Great Britain. Scientists have identified the most common symptoms that infected people are currently experiencing.
The coronavirus is mutating. It changes its properties – and with it what it does in our body. The virus continues to cause cold symptoms. Which these are, however, can vary from variant to variant.
The BA.5 variant, a sub-variant of Omicron, is currently predominant in many countries. According to the health authorities, it already accounts for around 78.7 percent of new infections in the UK – and thus the majority of new cases and thus also the newly reported symptoms.
To identify which symptoms are most common, UK scientists launched the Zoe Covid Study. With the help of an app, the UK population continuously documents their signs of illness. So far, more than 4.7 million people have taken part. The documentation is then reviewed by British researchers, including those from the renowned Kings College London.
One such scientist is Tim Spector, one of the co-founders of the Zoe study. On “Youtube” he gives regular updates on the latest findings from the ongoing investigation. For example, a few days ago about the currently most common Covid symptoms.

As Spector emphasizes, it is not yet possible to say which of the symptoms can be assigned to which variant. The ones mentioned here are therefore not clearly to be evaluated as BA.5 symptoms. However, since the majority of cases are infections with the BA.5 variant, it is likely that these signs of the disease are common in this variant.

In Germany, too, the omicron variant BA.5 is responsible for the majority of cases. According to the latest weekly report from the Robert Koch Institute, it accounts for 86.5 percent of new infections in Germany.
As early as June, as part of the “Zoe Covid Study”, the British researchers were able to identify numerous differences in omicron compared to the previously prevailing delta variant. They analyzed about the duration of the symptoms. They found that these average
stopped.
They also found that those infected with omicrons were less likely to be hospitalized.
