America’s 33rd president will be on the forefront of Presidents Day weekend in Florida Keys, as Clifton Truman Daniel, Harry Truman’s oldest grandson, portrays his grandfather in “Give ‘Em Hell, Harry!” at Truman’s retreat.
Daniel, an actor and author with a lot of experience, performed Friday at the sprawling Harry S. Truman White House in Key West. This is where Truman spent nearly six months of his 1945-1953 presidency.
Daniel stated that Daniel could “relax in Key West;” he said. He apparently wrote to his grandmother saying that he was able to think of a way to bring the entire government to Key West, and then just to stay.
The show features weekend activities at Florida’s only presidential museum. Saturday’s encore performance is also included.
The production is a humorous and accurate exploration of Truman’s life, presidency and lifestyle. It begins with Harry arriving at the Little White House in a limousine that was actually used by the former POTUS.
Daniel stated that Truman was a human being who cared deeply about Americans. He also remembers him as his grandfather who had a strong sense for fun.
Daniel stated, “I hope he’d appreciate that I’m portraying his onstage and that I would think he’d think I’m doing an excellent job.” “I think my grandfather would be proud to see me perform at the Little White House for Key West audiences.
The weekend’s events will be presented by the Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation. Monday’s Presidents Day picnic is free for all.
