The life of current Aston Villa manager and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrad could have been very different. In an interview he talks about the incident that almost cost him his professional career.

Injury while playing soccer: At the age of nine, while playing soccer privately, Steven Gerrard stepped on a garden fork, digging “a few inches” into his toe. At “Sky Sport” he now reports: If it hadn’t been for the medical team at Liverpool FC, his big toe would probably have been amputated.

Short, compact, clear

Liverpool doctor prevented amputation: The fork was rusty, which is why his toe became inflamed and he had health problems. “They wanted to remove my toe,” says Gerrad. But the doctor, “Steve Heighway prevented this procedure and we treated him conservatively in a different way.”

A legend is now a coach: Gerrard had played at Liverpool FC since his youth before moving to the Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of his career. He has been the manager of Aston Villa since the 2021/22 season.
