Amazon is currently in the crossfire of grieving relatives. The accusation: The online retailer sells a deadly chemical without access restrictions. In the USA, 50 people are said to have taken their own lives with the help of this drug. Some of the victims’ relatives have now filed a lawsuit against the mega-corporation.
Accordingly, the online giant should not only sell the chemical freely on its platform. According to a lawyer, the Amazon algorithm should also offer a book on how to use it correctly, a scale to weigh the lethal dose and a drug to suppress nausea when looking for the deadly chemical. Amazon rejected a request from a mother whose depressed son killed himself with the chemical to remove the drug from the platform. It was “unfair” to hold the group accountable for this. The company regretted the loss of her son. “But at least your son is in the hands of our God now,” Amazon attorneys wrote in an email to the family.
The deceased’s mother didn’t let the tasteless answer sit down. She went to court. “You know it kills people,” she said in an interview. “They just don’t care.”
The lawyer for another affected family is also fighting on her side. As Carrie Goldberg explains on Twitter, there is no use for the chemical outside of laboratories – except for suicide. “Amazon removed the 1-star reviews from grieving family members who tried to warn of the dangers,” writes Goldberg.
The “serial killer” Amazon, as the lawyer described the company after contacting lawyers, is selling the drug on purpose. As early as 2019, one person wrote a review asking for the chemical to be removed from the range. Previously, the reviewer’s niece had killed herself with it. Amazon didn’t respond back then either.
The company is now said to comment on the latest allegations at the request of members of the US Congress. Amazon’s vice president of public relations, Brian Huseman, then explained: “Amazon makes a wide range of products available to our customers because we trust them to use these products as the manufacturers intended.” That customers misuse the products is coming occasionally before.
