For the third time within a few weeks, consumer advocates are reporting a chip recall. A substance that can be harmful to health has also been detected in the “Bio Salted Tortilla Chips” from the manufacturer Santa Maria.
The organic supermarket chain Alnatura is recalling corn chips and corn rolls because of contamination. Affected are “Alnatura Mais-Chips Natur”, “Maichips Paprika” and “Maisröllchen” with all best-before dates up to and including December 7th, 2022, according to a statement from the company based in Darmstadt. As a precaution, buyers of the affected products should not eat them and can therefore return them to stores where they will receive replacements. Other Alnatura products are not affected by the recall.
At the end of June, Alnatura was already recalling corn chips with several best-before dates because tropane alkaloids had been detected. After follow-up investigations, the recall has now been expanded. The goods have already been withdrawn from sale.

Tropane alkaloids are natural plant compounds found in weeds that can grow on corn fields. It was said that they can get into food via the harvest. They can lead to temporary health problems such as nausea, drowsiness and headaches. Consumers were therefore urged to stop eating the chips as a precaution and to return products with the stated best-before date to the respective markets. In addition to Alnatura, FZ Organic Food BV is also currently having problems with tropane alkaloids in its chips, as reported by productwarning.eu. The following products are therefore being recalled:
All BBDs from August 15, 2022 up to and including January 9, 2023 are affected. The goods can be returned at the point of sale.

Affected is the product “Bio Tortilla Chips salted” from the manufacturer Santa Maria with a best before date of March 30, 2023, as the Walluf-based company announced in a recall published on groceries-warning.de on Friday.
