The fifth installment in The Hunger Games film series is a prequel set 64 years before Katniss’s first Games. We follow a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) who does not seem destined to become the ruthless president of Panem played by Canadian actor Donald Sutherland.
Snow, 18, hopes to get a scholarship to continue his education and restore his family’s reputation within the Capitol. At the same time, the leaders in place noticed a decline in popularity of the Hunger Games and mandated its creator, Casca Highbottom (Peter Dinklage), to infuse them with new energy on the occasion of their tenth presentation.
Dean of the Academy where Snow studies, he announces to his students that this year they will be mentors of the tributes from the different districts. Snow is assigned Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) to District 12, the same one where Katniss will be born some fifty years later. Rebel, the musician must follow the advice of the ambitious young man in order to offer the requested television show and survive the cruel competition.
The eccentricity and flamboyance of the costumes in the first Hunger Games films certainly contributed to the success of the franchise. The colorful ensembles of Effie Trinket, the character of Elizabeth Banks, the extravagant suits of the animator Caesar Flickerman, played by Stanley Tucci, or the entire wardrobe of Katniss, including the famous wedding dress that catches fire, left their mark.
“In Catching Fire, Jennifer Lawrence wears between 65 and 75 different costumes,” says designer Trish Summerville. Some are only on screen for a few seconds, but we had to create them for the entire district tour. »
The task was less colossal for The Ballad of Songbirds
After getting approval from director Francis Lawrence for one of the designs, she started the process from scratch, Summerville adds. “I wanted her to be more connected to Katniss. This character is so loved and I wanted our fans, who notice all the details, to be able to feel his presence, mentions the one who is also behind the costumes of three David Fincher films. So, I kept the corset, which is part of the culture of District 12.”
The designer emphasizes that Lucy Gray’s radiant personality is exacerbated by the contrast of her dress, the colors of which have faded over time.
For his part, Coriolanus Snow tries to stand out with his clothes, with the help of his very creative cousin Tigris (Hunter Schafer). The film opens as he searches for the shirt she modified so that his uniform looks different from the other students. “There are 23 mentors and they all wear the Capitol colors of black, white, gray, red and navy. He is all in black, with a white shirt with special buttons and a red rose on his jacket, which is Snow’s signature. »
