Earlier it was reported that US Ground forces have placed an order for the development of “smart” sights for automatic rifles of a caliber of 6.8 mm of the next generation. According to the materials procurement, the American company L3Harris Technologies, and Vortex Optics has received 8.8 million dollars each to develop promising sights that automatically adjust the aiming in accordance with a given distance to the target and type of ordnance.
“Modern possibilities of small arms almost rested on the ceiling determined by the laws of physics. Continue to increase the effectiveness of the weapon can be either doing something with the cartridge, or improving sights. If we talk about ammo, higher caliber and power entails increasing the mass and, as a consequence, the decrease of wearable ammunition. Therefore, in addition to attempts to create new weapons and circumvent the laws of physics, the United States began the development of new sighting devices,” said Popenker.
He noted that in recent military conflicts, the expenditure of ammunition was “quite monstrous, but the target gets a very low percentage of bullets.

According to him, the telescopic sight with variable magnification is needed primarily in order to see a target at long and medium distances.

Popenker stressed that the new development that ordered the US military will allow a laser rangefinder to determine the distance to the target, and sewn in the sight of the computer, knowing the type of cartridge and its ballistic properties, will make the appropriate corrections for temperature, distance, and so on.
