College football training camp can be a challenging time when the initial excitement wears off, and the real work begins. However, for the Texas Longhorns, head coach Steve Sarkisian is impressed with the team’s focus and leadership this year.

After a recent scrimmage, Sarkisian noted that while there were some typical mistakes like false starts and penalties, the players responded well to coaching and showed a high level of competitiveness. The coach highlighted the leadership of the team as a key factor in keeping the energy and intensity high during practices.

One area of focus for Sarkisian has been the receivers and the defensive front. He mentioned that quarterback Quinn Ewers, in his third year as a starter, is developing good chemistry with the receivers and is able to communicate effectively with them on the field. The depth of the team allows for different players to rotate in without a drop-off in performance, which is a positive sign for the Longhorns.

In light of a season-ending knee injury to running back CJ Baxter, Sarkisian is considering options to add depth at the position. During the scrimmage, junior Colin Page stood out among others, showing promise in running the ball and on special teams. Young players like Jaydon Blue and Tre Wisner performed well, while freshmen Christian Clark and Jerrick Gibson are making progress in their transition to college football.

Overall, Sarkisian is pleased with the team’s progress and the competitive spirit shown during practices and scrimmages. The focus on leadership and communication bodes well for the Longhorns as they continue to prepare for the upcoming season.
