Bevo, the beloved mascot of the Texas Longhorns, will be notably absent from the sidelines this Saturday as the Longhorns gear up to face off against the Georgia Bulldogs in their first Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championship game. The Silver Spurs Alumni Association Executive Director, Ricky Brennes, shared that SEC officials have cited space constraints as the reason behind Bevo’s absence at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Uga XI, the University of Georgia’s bulldog mascot, will be in attendance for the highly anticipated game. Brennes noted that Uga XI has a significantly shorter trip to the stadium compared to Bevo, as Athens is a mere 70 miles away while Austin stands approximately 950 miles from the venue.
The absence of Bevo from this weekend’s championship game not only disappoints Longhorn fans but also robs college football enthusiasts of the chance to witness a reunion between the iconic animal mascots. The connection between the two schools and their mascots was solidified at the 2019 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans when Bevo seemingly charged at Uga XI’s dad, Que, during a pregame meet-and-greet. The incident, captured on video, showed Bevo breaking through the sideline barriers and accidentally grazing a photojournalist in the process.
Despite the setback of Bevo’s absence, the Longhorns are determined to make a mark in their inaugural year in the SEC as they strive to clinch the coveted SEC football crown. The highly anticipated game is scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. on Saturday, offering fans a thrilling showdown between two powerhouse teams.
For those eager to catch all the pregame action, Texas Gameday, the official pregame show of Texas football, will be airing at 2 p.m. on KBVO. Hosted by Jonathan Thomas alongside Longhorn legends Dan Neil and Alex Okafor, the show promises to provide valuable insights and excitement leading up to the big game.
