on 1 August in the Metropolitan area of the Arts will begin work summer cinema Garage Screen. In the opening program – the Russian premiere of the film “time” by Tsai Ming-Liang and “the Woman who fled” Hong sang-soo, and also the Moscow premiere of “Martin Eden” by Pietro Marcello. The world premiere of this film took place in 2019 at the Venice film festival. But the tape “Days” and “the Woman who ran away” from the competition program of the Berlinale.
According to the curator of the festival Garage Screen Evgeny Gusyatinsky, these films accurately reflect the status and flow of contemporary auteur cinema: “In the contemplative “Days” Cai Minlen gropes for a new visual language that exists already on the wrong side of cinema and contemporary art. In “Martin Eden” by Pietro Marcello are drawn to classic cinema of the XX century, finding in it the unbridled sensuality. A Hong sang-soo in “the Woman who ran away” confirms that it is a rare and almost unique today, the author from whom there can be copycats”.
Promised that in 2020, the program of the Garage Screen there will be three new regular sections, and one of the main events of the new season will be the emergence of a cinema projector for displaying movies from 35 mm film.
“Heading “Silver copy” consists of paintings created in the analog era, and is intended for projection of the film, the title refers to the silver as one of the main elements included in its composition. Topic “Happy hours” will present the author’s cinema, beyond the standard duration and directly working with visualization time. It includes innovative films that push the boundaries of cinema due to the expansion of screen time and the viewer’s perception of time – not only cinematic, but also physical. “To see once” – a series unique and, as a rule, the only screenings of new films, most of which will be released in Russian cinemas and which can be viewed only in Garage Screen. This category will include most different film festivals, documentary, experimental, fiction, and captured by modern artists”, – explained in the release, the Garage cinema Screen.
the Heading “Happy hours” will open the film “Mother and the whore” (1973) by Jean Eustache will be shown from film. The section will also present an early picture of the Filipino Lava Diaz’s “Batang Westside” (2001) and a five-hour Japanese drama “Happy hour” (2015) Ryusuke Hamaguchi, in part gave the name to the whole program.
In the new season Garage Screen also waiting for a joint program with the current Russian film festivals including the international documentary film festival of music and the new culture Beat Film Festival and the Moscow international festival of experimental film MIEFF. Within MIEFF in ��item cinema Garage Screen will be displayed the first retrospective of the Russian avant-garde pioneer of queer cinema Barbara hammer and the international competition program, which included 29 experimental films 2019-2020. Another project of the new season will be a programme of screenings with The Blueprint – independent online publication about fashion, beauty and contemporary culture.
