It’s election Sunday and you didn’t have your election card with you or lost it? FOCUS Online tells you what you absolutely need when voting in the state elections in Lower Saxony.
On May 15, a new state parliament will be elected in North Rhine-Westphalia. Anyone entitled to vote can cast their vote by postal vote or at the ballot box. You will receive your voting notification before the election.
But what happens if you lose or forget the document? Can you still choose?
The answer is yes. Voting is also possible without voting notification. The Federal Returning Officer explains: “Although the election notification is helpful for the electoral board to find the eligible voter more quickly in the voters’ register, it is not absolutely necessary for participation in the election.” This also applies to this year’s state election in Lower Saxony.
However, if you did not receive any voting notification before the election, you should contact your municipality in good time to find out whether you are listed in the voters’ register. If your name is not there, you cannot vote.
In addition to the voting notification, you should definitely have an identification document with you at the polling station. Under no circumstances can you vote without an ID card. This can be the identity card or the passport. The poll workers must be able to use the ID card to check whether they are a registered voter at the polling station.
The election notifications should be in the mailbox 21 days before the election. Eligible voters who have not received voting notification should contact their local electoral office.
