Katie Meyer, Stanford’s goalkeeper, has died. She was the one who led the Cardinal to the NCAA College Cup championship win in 2019. She was 22.
The cause of death has not been released. On Monday, Stanford announced that a student had died in one of its residence halls. The university confirmed Meyer’s death on Tuesday. Meyer is a senior international relations major.
After a scoreless 2019 championship game, Meyer stopped two penalties shots and led Stanford to a 5-4 shootout win over North Carolina.
After Stanford’s second save, the native Californian was praised for her animated celebration. Teammate Kiara Pickett attempted to give Stanford the trophy.
“Katie was extraordinarily dedicated to everyone and everything in her world. Stanford stated that her friends described her as an extraordinary team player. She said she chose an academic discipline that ‘changed her perspective on the world and the very crucial challenges that we must work together to overcome’, and she also expressed her passion for Cardinal women’s soccer and women’s sports overall.
