Argentina’s cult striker Carlos Tevez has declared his career over. The 38-year-old brawny and always combative South American hasn’t played for a year, most recently he was under contract with Boca Juniors in the Argentine capital.
Tevez, who belongs to the generation around superstar Lionel Messi, gave a very personal reason for his resignation. “I’m quitting football because I lost my number one fan,” Tevez said. What is meant is his stepfather, he died in February 2021 as a result of a corona infection.
“As a player, I gave everything, everything that was in my heart,” Tevez said on America TV’s Animales Sueltos talk show. He had offers from the USA, also from Argentina, but in the future he mainly wants to spend time with his own family. But the full-blooded attacker can’t get away from football, he wants to get started as a coach, and he’s working on a project with his brothers.
Tevez has over 70 caps for Argentina and has scored 13 goals. He has twice been voted Footballer of the Year in his home country, once in Brazil, where he also won the championship with Corinthians São Paulo, and once in Italy, where he even won the title twice with Juventus Turin. Tevez’s achievements include five championships with Boca, two Premier League titles with Manchester United and one with Manchester City, as well as the Champions League victory with United in 2008.
He was also Olympic champion with Argentina in 2004. Back home, Tevez is nicknamed “El Apache” because of his origins in an area known as “Fort Apache.”
