Markus Söder warned of an impending “gas triage” on Monday. The CSU leader accused the federal government of using the wrong strategy in dealing with Russia and warned of the serious consequences of social decline and the impact on millions of jobs in Germany.
CSU boss Markus Söder has accused the federal government of having the wrong strategy in dealing with Russia. Now there is a danger that Germany will be “cut by bit” decoupled from Russian gas supplies, said Söder on Monday after a joint presidium meeting of the CSU and the Bavarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
“There is a real threat of a huge energy emergency, a kind of gas triage, which will then come,” warned the CSU boss and spoke of an imminent “ice-cold winter”. This will affect millions of jobs.
The CSU leader also accused the federal government of being slow in trying to find a replacement for Russian gas. “Other countries are faster,” said Söder. Italy has already signed agreements with Qatar.
The Bavarian Prime Minister also reiterated his demand to extend the life of nuclear power plants and to promote water energy, which is important in Bavaria as part of the renewable energies. Söder accused the Greens of now wanting to get out of nuclear power for purely ideological reasons.
The CSU leader added on Twitter: “Our country is running out of energy.” Warm apartments and affordable energy should currently be the central task of the federal government. The price explosion can no longer be shouldered even by average earners.
“There is a risk of social decline,” warns the Bavarian Prime Minister. He called for a reduction in energy and electricity taxes. “Instead, the traffic light unfortunately switches to draught,” criticizes Söder.
