has not Yet started the summer, and scientists are already trying to estimate future yields of winter crops. Not only agronomists, but also experts of Institute of space research, which are satellite remote sensing of the Earth. They created algorithms based on the latest data on the state of the crops, as well as previous years, to assess the harvest this year.

– in early April it was clear that the condition of winter crops in southern regions of Russia, closer to the long-term norm, and in some areas even lower, – says Eugene Lupan, head of Department of satellite monitoring technologies IKI. – The growth of the so-called vegetation index during the last four weeks of March was significantly slower than “usual”. This allowed then to predict the likelihood of an adverse development of winter crops in southern regions of the European part of Russia.

And the data of the last decade of April only confirmed that the dynamics of winter crops in many southern areas, for example, the Stavropol territory and the Rostov region has deteriorated significantly. We can therefore expect lower yields of the winter crops in these areas than in previous years.
