Annually in Russia is 100-150 cases tornadoes. The country has its own "alley" tornado, said one of the authors of a study on the climatology of tornadoes, associate Professor of the Department of cartography and Geoinformatics, geographical faculty of the Perm classical University (PSUNR) Andrey Shikhov.
A team of scientists led by a researcher at the Institute of atmospheric physics RAS Alexander Chernobelskogo a few gathered enormous wealth of information about natural disasters in different epochs (a total of 2879 cases of tornadoes).
we have Created database allowed us to make interesting assumptions. In particular, it was possible to identify areas where tornadoes occur most frequently. Turned out of an alley a tornado, similar to the one that passes through several States of the USA, – has explained Andrey Shikhov.
In Russia in this "alley" hit the South of the Arkhangelsk region, the North of the Kirov and Nizhny Novgorod regions, the South of the Komi Republic and North-West of the Perm region, – said Andrey Shikhov.
The reason for frequent occurrence of tornadoes in the Northern regions is the relatively high moisture content of the air in the summer, as well as the fact that the trajectories of deep cyclones frequently pass through these areas.
Accurate representation of the climatology of tornadoes will predict the risks associated with them. In particular, this information will be useful to ensure safety at production facilities.
