Grocery prices in the supermarket are rising. Branded butter costs over 3.40 euros, the cheapest pasta is available for over 80 cents and a liter of milk costs over one euro. So it’s no wonder that people in Germany want to save. FOCUS Online tells you which simple tricks you can use to get branded food in the supermarket for free.
During the corona crisis, supermarkets and discounters achieved record sales. But the golden days seem to be over. The high inflation and the increased personnel and energy costs make for bad numbers.
German retailers suffered an unexpectedly sharp drop in sales in April. FOCUS Online learned: Larger discounters and supermarkets are now increasing the net output per branch. The shops should boost sales and employees should reduce their overtime with absenteeism.
In order to bring more people into the branches, the weekly changing brochures, discount coupons and free products are now playing an increasingly important role.
The aim of Aldi Süd, Aldi Nord, Lidl, Rewe, Edeka and other retailers is to lure people into the stores. If you push your shopping cart through the entrance, you may be doing most of your weekly shopping there.
There are four totally legal ways to get totally legal free groceries at the supermarket.
Look out for “1 gratis” adverts in brochures, apps and on shelves. If you buy a certain product and a product range, there is usually an additional product for free.
How does it work? In some cases you have to send the receipt to the manufacturer. They will then refund your money for the product, stating your bank details. Look out for vouchers on the shelf, in the brochure or in the app. Simply take the product with you and show the coupon at the checkout.
Customers can find free coupons in the apps from Lidl Plus, Netto Marken-Discount, Penny, Rewe, Edeka and other retailers. There are always vouchers in the prospectuses of Rossmann, Aldi Nord, Aldi Süd, Müller, Rewe or Netto Marken-Discount. They apply either to the entire purchase or to specific products. Converted, this brings you not only one, but several free groceries per purchase.
How does it work? Open the app in the branch and go to the “Vouchers” or “Coupons” tab. If there is a coupon for a free yogurt, take it off the shelf and click on the coupon in the app. If this is activated, simply show the voucher at the cash register. You can then take the product with you free of charge.
Large brand manufacturers always have cashback campaigns on offer.
How does it work? Customers buy the selected products in the branch, take a picture of the receipt with their smartphone (or copy it) and forward it to the manufacturer either by post or using a form. If you provide your bank details, the entire purchase price will be refunded to you within two to three weeks. FOCUS Online advises: Pay close attention to which products are affected and how you get your money. Information on the packaging of the product can help.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s Payback, Deutschland Card, Rossmann, Kaufland-Card, Budni or Müller Drogerie: If you show your customer card or points card every time you make a purchase, you will often receive vouchers that you can redeem. This makes shopping cheaper.
