Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev defeated Spanish player Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the first round match of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tournament in Rotterdam.The match ended 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in favor of the Russian, who was seeded sixth. Medvedev will play in the second round against the winner of the match between French player Kenten Alice and Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp.Medvedev, 27, ranks 11th in the ATP rankings. The Russian tennis star won 15 tournaments under the auspices of the organization. His best Grand Slam tournament result was winning the US Open in 2021. Medvedev won the ATP Cup and Davis Cup the same year as part of the Russian team.Davidovich Fokina, 23, is ranked 31st globally and has not won any ATP tournaments. At Grand Slam tournaments, his best result is reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2021.The Rotterdam tournament is an ATP 500 tournament on hard courts. The total prize fund of the tournament is more than $2 million. Last year it was won by Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
