Russian model tank robots are intended to help the Bundeswehr simulate a possible Russian attack. As early as the end of 2021, Germany ordered the so-called ghost tanks from an Australian company. The British Army and the US Navy also use such models for exercises.

The Bundeswehr now wants to simulate a potential Russian threat with so-called ghost tanks. The Australian company “GaardTech” has delivered four tank doubles of Russian models to Germany. Steen Bisgaard, the company’s founder and boss, confirmed this to the “world”. The full-size robotic tanks will be used for target practice and maneuver testing to simulate how German forces could withstand a possible Russian attack.

The tanks were already ordered at the end of 2021, i.e. before the start of the Ukraine war. This would enable the Bundeswehr to follow other armed forces that have been conducting such simulations for several years, such as the US Marine Corps. The British Army has already ordered more than 30 robotic tanks from the Australian company, according to the report.

According to the company’s images, the four ghost tanks are said to be the Russian types T-72, T-80, T-90A and the future model T-14 Armata. The steel tank robot vehicles are remote-controlled and can be shot at, an expert from the German sales partner of the Australian company LASM told the newspaper. According to Bisgaard, his company could “produce any enemy or friendly vehicle for combat practice and combat room replication.”

The tanks with electric motors can simulate the thermal image, radar signature and electronic emissions of the Russian originals and can thus be used as a new training method for the German armed forces. This way you can train tactical variants instead of just relying on computer simulations.
