He recalled that on June 7 is world day for safety of food products. To celebrate this day began with 2019 by the decision of the UN General Assembly, which decided in this way to attract world attention to the subject, said Peter Shelishch.
“the UN estimates that unsafe foods cause annually about 600 million cases of disease and pose a threat to human health and the economy. Most affected women and children, migrants and the population of the countries in which armed conflict occurs. However, even in developed and developing countries, the victims of foodborne infections and foodborne diseases every year approximately three million people – over 5 percent of all deaths per year” – said Peter Shelishch.
If in Russia, with a population of 1.9 percent (about 1/40) of the population of the planet, for this reason, too, would die 5 per cent, of deaths from unsafe food were about 90 thousand people, shared their calculations with “RG” the consumers Union of Russia. However, according to Rosstat, food poisoning in 2018 (more recent data unavailable – approx.ed.) caused the death of only 262 people – almost 350 times smaller, said Peter Shelishch. “The reliability of these data on mortality is confirmed by court statistics: in 2018 under part 2 of article 238 of the criminal code for the production or sale of goods, performance of works, rendering services not meeting safety requirements, under aggravating circumstances, including the death of one man, was convicted of 990 people, and part 3 of this article establishing liability in the event of the death of two or more persons were convicted 31 people. And it’s for all dangerous goods and services, not just food. So these data can be trusted, and therefore be proud of the very high level of food safety in Russia”, – stated the expert.
the Chairman of the Russian consumers ‘ Union also noted that cases of food poisoning, it would be even less with proper eating behavior of consumers. “Sometimes we ourselves create the problems. The product has deteriorated, and we are trying to save, cut off the spoiled part, further processed,” said Peter Shelishch.
the Expert added that the country, unfortunately, remains relatively high proportion of counterfeit drugs in some categories of finished products. The safety and quality of food are different concepts, he said. “It is clear that many manufacturers deliberately skimp on the quality and weight of the products, thus striving to reduce their cost. But in this case, it is necessary to reduce the final retail price for consumers and fair to tell what made the product”, – said the expert.
Also, according to the Chairman of the Union of the Russian consumers, to ensure food safety in catering, it is possible to adopt foreign experience. “Here checked out the well-known chain that sells sushi was that the rolls were with Salmonella. It happened because of the unsanitary conditions of manufacture and storage of the product. I like the system that operates in new York. At the entrance of almost every school you can see information about his health category, which assigns the sanitary Department of the city. Four categories – A, b, C, D. Where A is highest and D the lowest. Visitors can see it and vote for the establishment of their money. And it works better than any supervision,” said Peter Shelishch.
