Mikael Torpegaard reached back to the familiar tennisrammer in Ohio, just before Donald Trump closed the UNITED states.
“We should be out now.”
Mikael Torpegaard woke up abruptly in a bed in Kazakhstan 12. march. Corona-dissemination seriously exploded across Europe, and now thought his coach that it was time to leave the country and come home in a hurry.
Denmark’s best tennis player should have played his second match in the Challenger tournament on the day, but he withdrew before the meeting with a dutchman.
“Donald Trump had just introduced a travel ban, so I had to hasten back to the UNITED states, where I have all my træningssetup, so I was not confined to Denmark. So I let the rackets be, and then it was just out of the airport,” says Mikael Torpegaard.
It would be wise to take to their heels as soon as possible. Two flights later landed Torpegaard in New York.
“the Plane was delayed, and I ended up having to go through customs, 12 minutes before Trumps travel ban entered into force. It was the last aircraft that were closed in Newark. It was pretty wild,” says the 25-year-old Torpegaard.
Now he’s back in the familiar træningsomgivelser in Ohio, where he still is affiliated with the college, and the big setup, which he has described as vital to its development.
All the tennis tournaments are as a result of the global coronakrise initially suspended up to 5. June.
The involuntary break comes inconvenient for most, but a high level of Torpegaard, which found itself in a period with good results and had headed towards the top-100, as it is his stated goal to break the wall to 2020.
“I have had a superb start to the year and was in a ‘hot streak’ with great results, so it is as heavy as not to be able to hold on to the momentum,” says Torpegaard.
But in the next breath, he adds that he feels privileged to have its strong setup with the perfect training facilities in Ohio.
“I have træningsmakkere and access to private tennis courts and my fitnesstræners gym. I know of many players who stand completely without the opportunity to train right now, so on the way I’m pretty lucky.”
Therefore, it is also about utilizing turneringspausen best possible in order to be optimally prepared, for when again there is verdensranglistepoint on the game.
But Torpegaard is also conscious of the need to find balance in what can be described as a long offseason with no known end date.
Therefore, the screws he bit down træningsblusset and have the time to dedicate themselves to other things, not least his soon album-current band, Mardröm, which he sings and plays guitar in.
“It’s no use, I coach myself all the way down. Usually lasts a season is 11.5 months, so it is o.k. to give the body a little break and take a mental relaxing. It is my first longer tournament break since before high school.”
“So right now coach I’m on the tennis court one hour per day, and so I have stepped up the physical part. I think that I, along with my coaches have put a good plan for the next few months,” says Torpegaard.
the Time on the tennis court must be used to adjust the small details, for the current time is a rare opportunity to incorporate new routines without the need to be results-oriented.
“I work with the things that take a bit longer to be able to break through to the top 100. Right now it’s my vomit in the service.”
“It is hard to do, while playing tournaments because of the bad habits often takes over, if you get nervous in the fighting,” says the world’s current number 168.
