The Soviet Union under the leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev was ready to start negotiations with Finland on the transfer of Karelia. This was told in his book, former expert of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Finland, former diplomat, doctor of political science and writer and documentarian Yucca Seppinen.
In his words, Karelia could depart for the neighboring state in the period from late 1980s to early 1990-ies, but this did not happen because of the position of the President of Finland Mauno Koivisto, reports iltalehti.fi.
Seppinen notes that in the summer of 1990, the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee decided to agree to the independence of the Baltic republics, but then considered the possibility of transferring the Finnish side of Karelia. Supposedly the USSR did not have resources for the restoration of Viipuri. The writer says that communicated on this subject with Minister-counselor of the USSR in Helsinki Lion by Pausini.
Also Seppinen assures readers that the next opportunity to Karelia, the Finnish side was supposedly already in the times of Boris Yeltsin. And again against that Koivisto. The position of its President Seppinen explains that he feared the possible competition of the Republic of Karelia with the Western part of the country.
He is not wanted in Western Finland was a competitor in the face of Vyborg. Still in 1930-e years Vyborg was Finland’s successful city — says ex-diplomat.
He remembered another argument Koivisto. The President believed that additional land not needed, because “now does not work the whole of Finland to settle in”.
Earlier NEWS.ru reported that writer and military historian Alexander Shirokokrad said about the wine first and only President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev. According to him, he is to blame that gave independence to the Baltic republics without Russia’s relationship with the Kaliningrad region. The historian noted that the failure of adjustment due to the lack of a clear programme of action from the authorities.
