Aron Baynes experienced very bad months after the Olympics in Tokyo due to an extremely treacherous injury. The Australian even had to learn to walk. Almost a year later he feels fit again. The basketball player wants to return to the NBA.
Former NBA center Aron Baynes is targeting an NBA comeback and will now reportedly be training with US teams after recovering from a gruesome injury that severely curtailed his pro career last year.
The 35-year-old Big Man first injured his neck during a game played by his Australians at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Then he slipped while going to the toilet in the Olympic Hall and never recovered.
Baynes experienced extreme numbness in his limbs and was unable to walk after the fall. He was then taken to the hospital, where tests revealed internal bleeding was putting pressure on his spinal cord.
“It was the loneliest time of my life, when I was in the hospital, I kept losing consciousness, I went through my whole life plan and my goals and I just cried,” Baynes said in a conversation with US reporter Brian Windhorst in January . “My uncle Don had an accident ten years ago. He is paraplegic. My family has witnessed this firsthand. I was so scared.”
The Australian center had to stay in hospitals in Tokyo and Brisbane for two months to even learn to walk again. He made steady progress and was able to resume limited training earlier this year.
Now Baynes, who last played for the Toronto Raptors in the penultimate NBA season, wants to continue his basketball journey.
“It’s a remarkable comeback and a testament to all the hard work he’s put in,” his agent Daniel Moldovan told Windhorst.
