In February 1952, the then 25-year-old Elizabeth became Queen of the United Kingdom and Head of the Commonwealth. On June 2, 1953, her coronation took place in Westminster Abbey in London. The ceremony had been delayed for several months to pay tribute to Elizabeth’s late father, King George VI.
Queen Elizabeth II has now been on the throne for 70 years and Britain will be celebrating the monarch’s platinum jubilee in grand style for four days. Numerous events are planned from June 2nd to 5th, television all over the world will be showing special programs and viewers can also be there live in front of the screens at some major events.

Celebrations are held all year round in Britain, but the long weekend from Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June is undoubtedly the highlight.
It starts on Thursday with the “Trooping the Color” parade in London. Start is 11.00 a.m. British time, in Germany it is already an hour later. The royal family will then appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. On the same day, bonfires are also lit throughout Great Britain and many of the Commonwealth countries.
The center of the celebrations is Saint Paul’s Cathedral, where a memorial service is held in honor of the Queen. “Great Paul”, the largest church bell in the country, will ring out again for the first time after a long period of restoration.
A fixed date is the “Platinum Party” in Buckingham Palace and the “Platinum Concert” by the BBC with stars such as soul legend Diana Ross, Queen and Duran Duran. Derby is in Epsom, southwest of London, but the Queen’s attendance at the horse race this year is unlikely.
The celebrations end in a popular way – with a nationwide neighborhood brunch, for which tens of thousands of people have already registered. A long party weekend ends with the anniversary parade “Platinum Pageant” on London’s boulevard “The Mall”.
