Sunflower oil or rapeseed oil is still difficult to find in German supermarkets. Anyone who finds the bottles on the shelf sometimes has to pay moon prices. A supermarket now sells the goods for almost 40 euros. FOCUS Online says how the price will continue and how you can still make a bargain. .

There was a great outcry when Aldi Süd and some Rewe branches offered a liter of sunflower oil for almost five euros. At the time, there was talk of usury and rip-off. In the meantime, a basic price per liter of more than five euros has been established. Some rapeseed, cooking and sunflower oil are only available in 750 milliliter bottles.

Depending on the provider and the supermarket, consumers pay between EUR 1.79 and EUR 5.99.

Some Edeka branches in Munich now also sell 10-litre bottles at a price of 39.99 euros. The vegetable oil is from rapeseed. Customers only receive the product in the checkout area.

At 39.99 euros for 10 liters, that makes a liter base price of almost four euros. Sounds like a bargain at first glance.

In fact, compared to January 2022, this is a price premium on the base price of 270 percent! At that time, rapeseed oil was still available for 1.39 euros per liter.

It’s not an isolated case. Rewe is currently selling the “Thomy” branded product for EUR 3.99 per 750 millilitres. Calculated per liter, that makes a liter price of 5.32 euros.

Seitenbacher organic sunflower oil is even more expensive. Here the manufacturer calls a retail price of 4.99 euros for the 250-milliliter bottle. Calculated on the full liter, that makes a full price of 20.00 euros.

Industry experts expect that sunflower oil will soon reach olive oil levels and prices will continue to rise. The average price per liter is currently 6.50 euros. Organic products and special varieties from Italy, Spain or Greece are much more expensive, sometimes this olive oil costs over 30 euros per liter.

If you want to buy cheap cooking oil, you have to look for it. At Netto Marken-Discount, Rewe, Penny and Edeka there are sunflower oil from the cheap own brands. The bottles are available for around two euros. However, because they are in particularly high demand, customers have to be quick.

FOCUS Online advises: look at the oil shelf every time you go shopping. Ideally in the lowest shelf areas. The bottles are hidden there.
