After their first investigations into the leaks in the Nord Stream pipelines, the Swedish authorities also suspect an act of sabotage. One thing is clear: detonations caused major damage to Nord Stream 1 and 2.

After their first investigations into the leaks in the Nord Stream pipelines, the Swedish authorities also suspect an act of sabotage. The investigations revealed that “there were detonations near Nord Stream 1 and 2 in the Swedish economic zone, which caused major damage to the gas pipelines,” said prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist.

“The investigations at the crime scene have confirmed the suspicion of serious sabotage,” he added. Evidence taken at the crime scene would now be examined.

Four leaks in the economic zones of Denmark and Sweden were discovered last week on the two pipelines Nord Stream 1 and 2 leading from Russia to Germany. Although the lines are not in operation, they are filled with gas for technical reasons.

The Swedish Coast Guard cordoned off the area around the leaks in the Swedish zone for an inspection of the crime scene within a radius of nautical miles (9.26 kilometers) on Monday.

Germany, Denmark and Sweden had announced a joint investigation. Russia denies being behind the blasts. President Vladimir Putin blamed the West for this and spoke of “sabotage”.
