There is an outcry. Animal rights group PETA has released a letter lamenting the death of an animal while filming. They call on those responsible to take action. What happened?
Usually nothing happens to animals during filming, the producers work with veterinarians and trainers who use animals specially trained for such situations in series and films to take on certain “roles”. In unfortunate cases, something can go wrong – that’s what happened during the shooting of the series “The Gilded Age”. The historical drama is created by one of the best series producers in the world: the US company HBO, which is already responsible for classics such as “Sopranos”, “Sex and the City” and “Game of Thrones”. Now the animal protection organization PETA has written a letter to HBO and published it. There they demand that HBO act because a horse died while filming the second season of The Gilded Age.
According to PETA, a whistleblower has released information that a 22-year-old horse died while making the series last week. “We demand that action be taken to ensure this doesn’t happen again.” PETA is also demanding that HBO hold those responsible accountable. HBO admitted the death June 28 after the letter was published, saying the horse died of natural causes, a veterinarian confirmed. “The safety and health of the animals is our top priority on all of our productions and the producers of The Gilded Age operate in full compliance with all safety precautions.” Various sources have told Variety that the horse has shown no signs of illness go. The horse’s body is now being examined.
In fact, a disaster like this has happened to an HBO series before. In 2012, three horses died while filming the series Luck, which is about horse racing. At the time there were allegations that the animals were under the influence of medication and were not trained for the situation.
