According to a survey by the German Retail Association (HDE), more than half of retailers in Germany currently see their existence threatened. As the “Lebensmittel Zeitung” reports, this is primarily due to the rise in energy prices.
Around 900 companies from different sectors, locations and sizes took part in the HDE survey. 22 percent of them even see themselves as acutely threatened. Because of the difficult Corona years, many retailers no longer have any financial reserves, says HDE general manager Stefan Genth.

Inner-city non-food retailers are currently particularly affected. Here, sales have still not reached the pre-corona level. The HDE is now calling on politicians to take action. The retail trade was not taken into account either in the relief package III or in the energy cost containment program.
A further complication is that consumers’ mood to buy has been severely dampened by inflation. According to HDE, there could be a drop in sales of around five percent in the second half of 2022 compared to the previous year.
