Restaurateurs and hosts are preparing for the expensive winter. Because energy and labor costs are rising, many businesses have to raise the prices on the menu. FOCUS online says what to expect from restaurant visitors now.
When the church consecration dinner is coming up on Sunday, many restaurant visitors have to swallow when looking at the menu. In Munich, the first companies are asking for prices of over 25 euros for traditional duck or goose dishes. The fair meal has never been so expensive.
A sample by FOCUS online showed that five out of seven taverns in Munich charge 32 euros for a portion of roast goose. Last year the price was 22 euros. Not all taverns wanted to make public statements to FOCUS online. “The prices for poultry have increased sharply on average nationwide,” the Federal Statistical Office explains the price development on request.
In fact, producer prices increased by 36.6 percent in August 2022 compared to the previous year. The decisive factor was the increase in chicken. The price adjustment here was around 40 percent. The culprits are apparently the significantly increased feed costs, transport and bottlenecks in breeding.
This affects dishes such as turkey breast fillet, turkey escalope or roast chicken. For a fitness salad with strips of chicken breast, restaurants in Cologne and Berlin are currently asking for prices that break through the 18 euro mark. Overall, there are adjustments to fish and meat dishes. Fish fingers, for example, cost just under 12 euros. Last year the price was less than 10 euros.
The Wiener Schnitzel or Schnitzel Wiener Art have long since reached the 20-euro mark.
In the supermarket, the prices for turkey, goose or duck products had risen by 50 percent in the previous weeks. At Edeka and Rewe, for example, a goose from Poland cost around 30 euros. In September, the supermarket still charged a good 9 euros for it.
However, going to a restaurant is not only becoming a luxury for more and more people because of the meat dishes. FOCUS online had already reported that the first hosts were reducing beer volumes. Instead of 0.5 liters, only 0.4 liters are served. In some cases, the price was even increased by 30 cents. In addition, salads or fries that were previously listed as a side dish on the menu are no longer free.
“We pay three times as much money for frying fat and oil. We have to pass that on to the visitors,” explains the “Zum Falke” inn near Neu-Ulm on request. The company currently charges 7 euros for the fries.
After suffering from the corona pandemic for a long time, restaurateurs now have to fear the next crisis. In addition to price increases on the menu, the first restaurants and hotels are introducing an energy fee for guests as a result of the increased costs.
For example, every visitor to the “Zum Grünen Hof” restaurant in Ganderkesee near Bremen has to pay an additional 1.50 euros and every guest at “The Hearts Hotel” in Braunlage has to spend three euros more per night.
The hotel expects annual additional costs for heat and energy of 200,000 euros. “By March at the latest, all reserves would have been used up and the otherwise healthy business would be bankrupt,” said Managing Director Meik Lindberg, explaining the energy surcharge for the guests.
Another concern is the noticeable caution of customers when booking: “We are observing that our guests are much more price-sensitive than they were a few months ago due to the changed economic situation. At the moment, bookings are made at much shorter notice, and our higher-priced suites are also less in demand.”
Basically, you should always pay attention to the information on menus, drinks menus and receipts. What items will you be billed for, what extras will you book and what dishes will you have to pay extra for?
