(Los Angeles) The superhero movie Shazam! Fury of the Gods topped the North American box office for its release, according to Sunday estimates from trade firm Exhibitor Relations, but analysts called its performance a disappointment.
The feature film, in which Zachary Levi stars, collected $30.5 million between Friday and Sunday in American and Canadian theaters, which is much less than the 53.5 million made by the first opus, released in 2019.
This sequel is thus “one of the worst starts for a big Hollywood superhero film”, noted the specialized magazine Hollywood Reporter.
In second place, Scream VI recorded $17.5 million in revenue.
For the sixth episode of this famous series of horror films, where the frightening “Ghostface” rages this time in New York, we find the fetish actress of the series Courteney Cox, but also the star of the series Wednesday, Jenna Ortega.
On the third place of the podium, Creed III, ninth film of the Rocky boxing saga, and the first without Sylvester Stallone, collected 15.3 million.
Creed III still tells the story of Adonis Creed—Apollo’s son—who this time comes out of retirement for a much-anticipated showdown against an old friend. This is the first film directed by Michael B. Jordan, who also plays the title role.
In fourth place, Sony Studios’ new sci-fi thriller, 65, starring Adam Driver, raked in 5.8 million.
It is closely followed by Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the latest in the Marvel Universe, with around 4.1 million.
6. Crazy Bear (3,9 millions)7. Jesus Revolution (3,5 millions)8. Champions (3 millions)9. Avatar : The Way of Water (1,9 million)10. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (1,5 million)
