Exciting Lineup Revealed for Austin Film Festival 2024

The Austin Film Festival has once again solidified its reputation as a key player in the lead-up to awards season by announcing the addition of two highly anticipated films to its lineup. Joining previously announced titles like Black Dog and The Piano Lesson, the festival is set to screen Nightbitch and The Room Next Door, both of which have been generating buzz on the global festival circuit.

Nightbitch, a satirical comedy based on Rachel Yoder’s novel, stars the talented Amy Adams as a new mother who suspects she may be transforming into a dog. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, will be showcased at AFF before its official release on Dec. 6 by Searchlight Pictures. AFF CEO Barbara Morgan expressed her admiration for the film, highlighting Amy Adams’ exceptional performance and the unique storytelling by writer/director Marielle Heller.

On the other hand, The Room Next Door marks Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language project, featuring powerhouse performances by Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. The film explores the rekindling of a friendship between two women after years of separation, delving into complex yet tender emotions. AFF senior programmer Andy Volk praised Almodóvar’s seamless transition to English-language filmmaking, noting the film’s captivating dialogue and profound themes.

In addition to these high-profile releases, AFF is also shining a spotlight on emerging talent with the announcement of five world premieres from Texas-based directors. These films, each with a strong Texan connection, showcase a diverse range of storytelling and filmmaking styles.

American Spirit, a college romance set in Austin’s West Campus neighborhood, follows the reconnection of former high school sweethearts Melody and Jonathan. Deaf Santa Claus, a heartwarming documentary, chronicles the journey of Charles Graves, a deaf man who embodies the spirit of Christmas as a professional Santa Claus in New Braunfels.

La Gloria, a border drama, explores the consequences of a rancher’s accidental shooting of a migrant woman on his property. Subtopia: The Story of Hueco Canyon takes a satirical approach to suburban life, unraveling the chaos that ensues when an HOA election turns into a full-blown riot.

Rounding out the world premieres is Texas Cult House, a queer horror film shot in Waco and featuring Austin’s own Adrianne Palicki. The film follows a group of friends who stumble upon an abandoned cult leader’s home and uncover dark secrets that haunt them.

With a diverse lineup of films that celebrate Texas talent and showcase visionary storytelling, the 31st annual Austin Film Festival promises to be a must-see event for cinephiles and industry professionals alike. Tickets and passes are available on the festival’s website, offering audiences the chance to experience the best of independent cinema in the heart of Texas.

As the festival continues to champion bold and innovative filmmaking, it remains a vital platform for emerging voices and established talents to showcase their work. From award contenders to local gems, the AFF 2024 lineup is a testament to the vibrant creativity and diversity of the film industry.
