Tuesday, June 14, 5:10 a.m .: The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the nationwide seven-day incidence on Tuesday morning as 447.3. The day before, the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week was 318.7 (previous week: 199.9; previous month: 477.0).

The health authorities in Germany recently reported 105,840 new corona infections and 107 deaths within one day to the RKI.

However, the incidence does not provide a complete picture of the infection situation. Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because not all infected people have a PCR test done. And only positive PCR tests count in the statistics.

9:15 a.m .: Travelers from abroad to the United States no longer have to present a negative coronavirus test before their flight from Sunday. This was announced by the health authority CDC on Friday (local time) in Washington. The pandemic has “entered a new phase” due to widespread vaccination, the availability of treatment options and increased immunity within the population, the authority justified the step. This has reduced the risk in the USA of becoming seriously ill with corona or even dying. The US travel industry had long been calling for an end to the test requirement for fully vaccinated air travelers.

Until now, travelers with destinations in the USA had to be tested the day before their international flight and were only allowed to board with a negative result. The test requirement applies regardless of vaccination status and applies to both foreigners and Americans. Excluded are people who have just recovered from Covid-19 and can show a letter from a doctor or health authority. For flights within the USA, on the other hand, there is no longer a test requirement and, according to a ruling by a federal court, there is no longer a requirement to wear a mask.

The US travel industry has called for the obligation to test to be ended as quickly as possible. In a letter from airlines, airports, hotel chains, associations and companies from the industry to the White House coronavirus coordinator last month, it was said that the economic losses due to the measure were significant. It was also pointed out that there is no obligation to test at the land borders with Canada and Mexico.

7:24 a.m .: The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the nationwide seven-day incidence on Saturday morning as 348.9. This is evident from numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5 a.m. The day before, the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week was 318.7 (previous week: 270.3; previous month: 507.1). However, the incidence does not provide a complete picture of the infection situation.

Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

The health authorities in Germany recently reported 65,337 new corona infections (previous week: 41,087) and 77 deaths (previous week: 73) to the RKI within one day. Here, too, comparisons of the data are only possible to a limited extent due to the test behavior, late registrations or transmission problems. In general, the number of registered new infections and deaths varies significantly from weekday to weekday, since more and more federal states do not transmit to the RKI, especially at weekends, and report their cases later in the week.

The RKI has counted 26,803,867 proven infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.

4.10 p.m .: The epidemiologist Prof. Markus Scholz sees little danger from the recently survived corona wave due to the BA.2 variant of Omikron that BA.5 could lead to high incidences in Germany in the summer. In an interview with the news portal watson, he said: “In Germany we have just experienced widespread contamination by the BA.2 variant.” As a result, the immune protection in the population is currently still high.

The data situation is still uncertain, but according to current assessments, an infection with BA.2 causes significant protection against BA.5. As always, this protection does not mean 100% security. According to Scholz, Germany will “probably only be faced with a new corona wave in autumn, when the immune effect has decreased by then.” Compared to Portugal, which is currently going through a BA.5 wave, the situation in this country is different. Because “there was no strong BA.2 wave like ours before, so the immunization is lower there.”

Nevertheless, the scientist from the Institute for Medical Informatics, Statistics and Epidemiology at the University of Leipzig warns of a decisive difference between variant BA.5 and variant BA.2, which is currently prevalent in Germany: “It differs (…) by a few mutations that but lead to a reduction in the immune effect.” The epidemiologist Timo Ulrichs supports this statement: “The mere fact that BA.5 can spread better in the human host than its competitors shows that it is fitter in terms of infectivity. It is not yet certain whether it can also cause increased and clinically more severe diseases,” said the professor from the Akkon University of Human Sciences in Berlin in an interview with watson.

Both experts unanimously emphasize that isolation or not traveling in summer cannot prevent a BA.5 wave. “New variants are constantly emerging. Travel activity undoubtedly contributes to its dissemination. However, no country can be permanently isolated either, so this aspect is not of crucial importance,” says Scholz. “A timely vaccination campaign is better than foreclosure, including the omicron-specific vaccine that will be available from autumn,” emphasizes the epidemiologist Ulrichs to watson.

6:26 a.m .: The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the nationwide seven-day incidence on Friday morning as 318.7. This is evident from numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5 a.m. The day before, the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week was 276.9 (previous week: 261.3; previous month: 522.7). However, the incidence does not provide a complete picture of the infection situation.

Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

The health authorities in Germany recently reported 77,878 new corona infections (previous week: 42,693) and 106 deaths (previous week: 91) to the RKI within one day.

The RKI has counted 26,738,530 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.
