13 million people in Germany are at risk of poverty. So almost every sixth. This is shown by the latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office. Women are more likely to be at risk of poverty than men.

In Germany, 13 million people were at risk of poverty last year. That is 15.8 percent of the population, said the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Thursday, based on the first results of the European joint statistics on income and living conditions. The number is about as high as in 2020, when 13.2 million people were at risk of poverty.

A person is considered to be at risk of poverty if they have less than 60 percent of the median income of the entire population. In 2021, according to the notification, this threshold was 15,009 euros net per year or 1251 euros per month for people living alone in Germany, and for two adults with two children under the age of 14 it was 31,520 euros net per year or 2627 euros per month.

Women are slightly more at risk of poverty than men. For them, the risk rate was 16.5 percent, for men it was 15.1 percent. Retirees in particular often have little money at their disposal. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 21 percent of women aged 65 and over were at risk of poverty.
