Traffic on the motorways returned to normal last year – but according to ADAC there were significantly fewer traffic jams than in the pre-Corona year 2019.
In total, the ADAC counted 474,000 traffic jams with a total length of 733,000 kilometers and 333,000 hours lost in 2022. The busiest day of the week was Thursday, with the fewest traffic jams on the weekends.
The club announced on Thursday in Munich that more traffic and more traffic jams are to be expected on the motorways this year. There are still many construction sites. Many motorway bridges are in a critical condition, and hundreds of bridges will have to be completely replaced in the next few years.
The longest traffic jams last year were on the A8 in Bavaria: On Saturday, July 23, the vehicles were on the Munich – Salzburg autobahn from Rosenheim for 44 kilometers, on December 15 on the Stuttgart – Munich autobahn before Fürstenfeldbruck for 40 kilometers.
As in previous years, according to the ADAC, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg were the federal states with the most congestion. 31 percent of the traffic jam hours were in North Rhine-Westphalia, 17 percent in Bavaria and 12 percent in Baden-Württemberg. There was more frequent free travel in the eastern German states: Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia together accounted for only 9 percent of the traffic jam hours.
