German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the violence against demonstrators in Belarus. As stated in the statement of the Cabinet of Ministers of Germany, she urged the Republic’s authorities to release those detained during the protests. It is noted that the European Union should discuss the introduction of sanctions against those responsible for human rights violations in Belarus, reports RIA Novosti.
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on his Twitter page also called on the EU to impose sanctions against those who “violate democratic values” in Belarus. Earlier the head of Ministry of foreign Affairs of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn said that the EU sanctions against the Republic should not affect ordinary citizens. On Friday, the EU foreign Ministers will hold an emergency meeting via videoconference, which among other issues will discuss the situation in Belarus and possible measures against persons involved in violence against participants of peaceful protests.
