Gerhard Schröder is apparently back in Moscow at the moment. When asked what he was doing there, the former chancellor said he was on vacation. It is unclear whether Schröder will also meet President Vladimir Putin in Russia.
According to a report, ex-Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) traveled to Moscow again. The broadcasters RTL and ntv reported on Monday that he had stayed at a hotel in the city center of the Russian capital. When asked what he was doing there, the Chancellor said: “I’m going on vacation here for a few days. Moscow is a beautiful city.”
According to “Bild”, Schröder flew to Moscow via Baku on Sunday with “Azerbaijan Airlines”. The former Chancellor does not have bodyguards with him. According to Ntv, Schröder’s hotel is not far from the headquarters of the Russian oil company Rosneft. When a reporter pointed out that Rosneft headquarters was not far away, Schröder replied: “Is that so? Oh yes, that’s right, you’re right.”
The former chancellor decided in May to give up his position on the supervisory board there and also declared that he would not accept an offered position on the supervisory board of the Russian gas company Gazprom.
Schröder has been criticized for years for his ties to Russia and his close ties to President Putin. He is accused of not having sufficiently distanced himself from Russia’s attack on Ukraine. It remains unclear whether Schröder will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At the beginning of March, Schröder, who is being expelled from the SPD, traveled to Moscow and spoke to Putin about the Ukraine war. The former chancellor said in an interview two weeks ago that Putin was definitely interested in a negotiated solution.
