In the Pike pond, located in the natural-historical park “Kuzminki-Lublin”, Mospriroda specialists found 10 marsh turtles. Reptiles with a spotted muzzle are met by employees and visitors not for the first time.
Turtles after wintering at the bottom of the reservoir get out on the shore or climb on the trunks of trees growing near the water and bask in the sun for hours. They, like other reptiles, are cold-blooded animals, and ultraviolet rays are very important for the production of vitamin D and calcium metabolism. It is easy to take pictures of turtles during sunbathing, but it is not recommended to catch them. Reptiles can carry infections.
In different years, marsh turtles were seen in the natural and historical parks “Tushinsky”, “Izmailovo”, “Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo”, “Moskvoretsky” and “Tsaritsyno”, Bitsevsky Forest, Serebryany Bor, landscape reserve” Skhodni River Valley in Kurkin”, as well as in the Yauza and Chermyanka rivers, Stroginskaya floodplain.
In addition, red-eared turtles are found in the reservoirs of Moscow. They are distinguished by red spots on the neck. The reptiles were observed in the natural-historical park “Kuzminki-Lublin”. However, the climate of Moscow does not suit them, their homeland is North America.
In the capital, 569 unique species of flora and fauna are listed in the Red Book, the marsh turtle is included in the supervisory list. Experts of Mospriroda remind that domestic turtles do not know how to survive in the wild, so it is not necessary to release pets into urban reservoirs.
