SPD Prime Minister Stephan Weil is the big winner of the state elections in Lower Saxony. The incumbent let himself be celebrated in his own ranks – but also showed relief after a tough election campaign.
SPD Prime Minister Stephan Weil appeared on the SPD stage in Hanover to great rejoicing and said: “It’s not that I don’t like hearing you clap. But: We are now at the end of a tough, one could also say very unpleasant election campaign.”
One was confronted with “deep concerns” of the citizens. “First of all, I want to thank all the helpers who have repeatedly put themselves forward.” He is proud to be in charge of such a national association. “We fought and we won tonight. The SPD is by far the strongest party. The voters have given the SPD the government mandate.”
Because further: “Of course I’m relieved. It certainly didn’t look like I would get such a vote of confidence from the citizens at all times. It was a very strong election campaign. Many helpers persevered for a long time and straightened their backs. I’m very happy about the win.”
This time he rates the success higher than five years ago. “To get such a vote of confidence in these times of crisis is something else again.”
