UNITED states calling it “an important step” that the Taliban movement on Sunday has released a number of prisoners.
The last few days has seen a little progress in the attempt to end the protracted war that has been going on in Afghanistan in the past two decades.
Talibanbevægelsen, who was removed from power in the country in 2001, released on Sunday, so 20 prisoners belonging to the afghan national security forces. It informs The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
at the same time, the Afghan government released 300 talibanfanger, which is not thought to pose a risk to society.
The relatively small fangebytte between the two sides marks a humble beginning on a major exchange of prisoners.
the Spoils was agreed upon, when the UNITED states and the Taliban at the end of February signed an agreement that should pave the way for peace in Afghanistan. There has since been disagreement about how the spoils, in practice, would need to be done.
But the verdict of the cautious beginning of the year is positive. It says the UNITED states’special envoy to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad.
– the Release of prisoners is an important step in the peace process and the reduction of violence, says Zalmay Khalilzad, who helped to negotiate the agreement in place.
– Both partners should do more for as soon as possible to meet the requirements laid down in the agreement between the UNITED states and the Taliban, he says.
In the agreement reads that the government of Afghanistan to release 5000 talibanfanger, while the Taliban must release the 1000 prisoners from the afghan national security forces.
the Spoils should really have taken place 10. march. It would have paved the way for the Taliban and the government could begin actual negotiations.
the UNITED states and other foreign forces – including the Danish – went into Afghanistan in the wake of the attack 11. september 2001 in the UNITED states.
Talibanbevægelsen held the then hand over Osama bin Laden, who stood at the head of the militant group al-Qaeda.
the Group was behind the attacks 11. september 2001 in the UNITED states.
