Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against a North Texas doctor, Dr. May Lau, for allegedly providing gender-affirming care to nearly two dozen patients after the state’s ban took effect last September. Dr. Lau, who works at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and is a professor at UT Southwestern, is accused of prescribing testosterone to 21 patients after the law went into effect on Sept. 1, 2023.
The lawsuit, which spans 35 pages, alleges that Dr. Lau wrote prescriptions either after the law took effect or wrote them with instructions to refill them after the law was in place. Paxton referred to Dr. Lau as a “scofflaw” and a “radical gender activist,” stating that each violation could result in the revocation of her medical license.
In response to the lawsuit, Children’s Medical Center and UT Southwestern have been contacted for comment, but have not yet responded. Paxton emphasized that the state will continue to prosecute doctors who provide what he deems as “harmful ‘gender transition’ drugs and treatment.”
Senate Bill 14, which was passed in Texas, prohibits gender-affirming health care for children, including treatments such as puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgeries. The law also mandates the Texas Medical Board to revoke the licenses of any medical professionals who violate it.
Despite efforts by Texas families of transgender children and various organizations to challenge SB 14 in court, a temporary injunction granted by a Travis County judge was overturned by the state Supreme Court, which upheld the law in June.
