Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz announced on Saturday that due to the ongoing investigation against him on suspicion of complicity in bribery and abuse of trust, he decided to leave his post.
He proposed to the President of the Republic Alexander van der Bellen to appoint the Minister for European and Foreign Affairs Alexander Schallenberg as acting head of Government.
Austria has launched an investigation into the Chancellor and his entourage
Kurz himself will remain the leader of the conservative Austrian People’s Party and will take the place of a deputy of the National Council (lower house of parliament). He made the corresponding statement at a specially convened press conference.
