Kimmie Rhodes, a well-known singer-songwriter, has been hosting a weekly residency at the Saxon Pub in Austin to support Housing Opportunities for Musicians and Entertainers (HOME). The series, called Kimmie & Friends Play for HOME, features various Austin artists who come together to perform music, comedy, and more to raise funds for the organization.
Rhodes, who is a board member of HOME, initiated the residency to bring back the old Austin spirit of musicians playing together. Last year, the series raised $25,000 for the nonprofit, and this year, they are aiming to raise more with the help of a guitar signed by participating artists that is up for raffle.
The proceeds from the residency go towards providing grants to aging musicians in Austin to help them with housing expenses such as rent and utilities. The organization, which was founded in 2012, now supports 27 clients, including local blues legend Miss Lavelle White.
The residency features a lineup of talented artists including The Eggmen, Jaston Williams, Larry Gatlin, and Ray Benson, among others. The musicians perform for free, with all the money raised going directly to support the cause. The residency is not only a way to enjoy live music but also a chance to give back to the community and support local musicians in need.
Rhodes emphasizes the importance of supporting Austin’s elder musicians who have contributed to making the city a vibrant and musical place. With the rising cost of living and other financial challenges, many musicians struggle to afford to stay in Austin. The residency serves as a way to ensure that these legendary musicians can continue to play music and contribute to the city’s cultural scene.
The gigs take place every Monday from 6-7:30 pm, providing a perfect opportunity for music lovers to enjoy a night of great music and support a worthy cause. The series is not just about raising funds but also about celebrating the spirit of collaboration and community that makes Austin a special place for musicians and music enthusiasts alike.
As the residency continues to grow, Rhodes hopes to expand its impact and reach even more musicians in need. By coming together as a community and supporting each other, the music scene in Austin can continue to thrive and preserve the legacy of its talented artists for years to come.
