for six years, scientists from Japan’s Tohoku University studied the effects of citrus on health, especially the elderly people. In research took part more than 13 thousand people over the age of 65 years. A study published in the journal British Journal of Nutrition.
According to the findings of scientists, those who ate citrus three to four times a week, the risk of dementia, which is popularly called senility, decreased by 18%, while those who ate fruit daily – 23%.
Citrus fruits are rich in flavonoids and plant polyphenols such as naringin, hesperidin, and neohesperidin narirutin. These flavonoids possess neuroprotective action antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and wuchusk the transmission of nerve signals. The researchers believe that these properties of citrus can cause a reduction in the risk of dementia.
Scientists hope that similar dietary recommendations will be useful for many countries and, primarily in Japan, where the percentage of ageing population is increasing every year.
