In the summer of 2021, Rossiya Airlines began preparing to operate the Irkut MS-21. A year later, the Aeroflot subsidiary wanted to start regular flights with its domestic jet. But nothing came of it.
The new medium-haul jet was already much delayed when Russia went to war in Ukraine in early 2022. In addition, sanctions cut off the Russian aviation industry from Western components.
And so Irkut announced that these parts would be replaced by Russian ones – or by those from friendly countries. This further delayed the start of the MS-21.
Now, at least, Irkut has painted the first plane in Rossiya’s colors. It is the prototype with the registration 73054.
The airline’s flight instructors are to be trained in the approximately three-and-a-half-year-old aircraft.
Two other prototypes are also to receive the Rossiya design. Deliveries will probably not begin until 2025.
