Driving a full 500 kilometers with a full tank of fuel for the price of 13.55 euros? This is unthinkable with a classic petrol tank. The situation is different with the two gas fuels CNG and LPG. Compressed natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas, also known as natural gas and LPG, are cheap and environmentally friendly alternatives to normal tank filling, reports “Kreizeitung.de”.
“The nitrogen oxides and particulate matter are significantly reduced by LPG and natural gas vehicles,” confirms the Internet portal “Gib Gas”. CNG causes around 23 percent fewer CO₂ emissions than petrol. A reduced tax rate will therefore also apply to CNG until 2026. Another advantage: Bio-CNG is made exclusively from residual and waste materials. These include, for example, liquid manure or sewage sludge.
But the supply of natural gas filling stations in Germany can still be expanded. There are almost 800 in total. If a driver of a natural gas vehicle cannot make it to the nearest CNG filling station, the cars contain a small petrol tank for emergency supplies.
“It’s worth converting,” says master mechanic Fritz Wüppenhorst from Diepholz to the “Kreizeitung.de”. This not only does something good for the environment, but also for your own wallet. Because the price per liter of natural gas is 97 cents and the technical upgrade of the vehicle costs between 1300 and 3500 euros.
The cars are refueled by weight. The CNG is pressed into the tank at high pressure and then billed in kilograms. Despite the many advantages, the number of natural gas vehicles is still manageable, but according to Wüppenhorst the number is increasing. According to “Statista”, there are currently around 83,067 natural gas-powered cars in Germany.
